Get Bookish

Soon there will be one less thing to leave Pflugerville for, as The Book Box opens in the Windermere Shopping Center (located at 15803 Windermere Drive, where you'll find Casa Garcia's and the Austin Regional Clinic) on Saturday, Aug. 1.

The Book Box is a community used bookstore that purchases your gently read books for store credit and has set pricing for both trades and sales. CDs, DVDs and audio books are also available.

Owner Beth Lee has spent the last year building an inventory, and envisions a gathering place with free wi-fi, kids' area and weekly craft activities, and local artist displays. Check out the website for details, and then come support this new and important local resource!

Still Time for Kids to Eat Free at the New Doc's

I'll admit I was sad when I saw the "closed" sign on the doors of the Water Tank restaurant, and added a flinch at seeing the new Freddy's being built just around the corner at the same time. Nothing against Freddy's, but hometowns feel more so when there is a good selection of local restaurants along with a few chains. (Freddy's is now open).

The Water Tank has now reopened as Doc's Drafthouse Bar & Grill. It's true that both restaurants were/are add-ons for other locations, but they are Austin-based and still carry that local feel.

Little has changed inside, and what is new is for the better. See their website for more details on the menu, but there is a lot to choose from and the burgers (including a veggie burger thank goodness!) are good and served on quality buns.

To celebrate their opening, kids eat free with purchase of an adult entree through the end of April. Check here for other specials.

Stylin'

Is Pflugerville catching up to the Rock and the Weird Place? New to the Pecan Street strip of auto parts stores and fast food is a true salon with spa services. Located in the new strip mall that also houses Starbucks and Freddy's, don't mistake it for another Supercuts.

Pflugerville is Stylin' Salon and Spa's second location. In addition to hair, Stylin' brings massage, facial, nail, tanning, makeup, and body wrap services to town so locals no longer have to get on I-35 for a little more style.

On the Mediterranean

My family was depressed to see Best Burger in the Windermere Plaza close down in the recent past, as this is where we went for a good veggie burger and fries. And since shortly before that we had to say good-bye to the Greek Pita House next door, it was not a happy local-restaurant haunting month for us!

But I am happy to see that at least something else yummy has opened in the Windermere Plaza on Pecan Street: The Mediterranean House Restaurant & Buffet.

I am not normally a buffet fan in general; when I go out, I value quality over quantity, and I want my food brought to me as that's kind of the point of going out. However, I will make an exception here because they have so many good offerings and I want a little bit of each! The decor is less than inspired, but I'm ok with that when the food is this good.

I'm sorry they don't have a website to refer to so you can preview them full menu, but suffice it to say they have all your Mediterranean favorites and a few more.

Hours are Monday through Saturday 11am-10pm, closed on Sunday. Phone is 989-9676.
